Why do I only get 4G when roaming?

There can be several reasons for this. First check that you are actually using a 5G router or another device with 5G support. A 4G router can never connect to 5G, even if the SIM card and mobile network support it.

When roaming, the connection also depends on which local operator the SIM card connects to. Not all partner networks offer 5G roaming everywhere, and coverage can differ greatly between operators.

This is often very noticeable in Germany, for example, where one operator gives good 5G while another in the same place only offers 4G or a much lower speed.

If you have a 5G router but still only get 4G, you can try manual network selection and test another available operator.

For travel in Europe we strongly recommend a 5G router, as an older 4G router often gives much poorer conditions for a stable and fast connection.

Check the roaming setting

Data roaming allows the device to use a mobile network other than the SIM card’s home network. With Wifi.se’s roaming SIMs it normally has to be switched on when the card is used on partner networks. If roaming is switched off, the router may show a signal but still block data traffic.

How network selection works when roaming

When roaming, the device searches for available partner networks. Automatic network selection is normally the first choice, but if the connection does not work, manual network selection can be a good troubleshooting step. Remember: a network that appears in the list does not automatically mean that your SIM is allowed to register on it.

If it still does not work

Check the status of the service and then test one thing at a time. When you contact Wifi.se support, please tell us which router you are using, which SIM/eSIM it concerns, which country you are in and what you have already tested. That way we can start directly with the right troubleshooting step.
