What is the APN?

APN stands for Access Point Name. It is the profile that tells the phone or router how to connect to the operator’s data network.

Think of the APN as an address to the right internet connection at the operator. If the APN is missing or wrong, the device can still show a signal and be registered on the mobile network but still have no internet.

When do you need to think about the APN?

  • When a SIM works in a phone but not in the router.
  • When you have a signal but no internet connection.
  • When you switch to a SIM from another operator or roaming solution.
  • When support explicitly asks you to check the APN.

On many modern devices the APN is set automatically from the SIM card. So do not change the APN unnecessarily.

What the APN does

APN stands for Access Point Name and tells the mobile network how the data connection should be set up. A wrong APN can mean that the router has a signal and registers on a mobile network but still has no internet.

The APN is normally filled in automatically. Only change it if a Wifi.se guide or support gives a specific value. After changing the APN you should save the setting and restart the data connection or the router.

Do not change more than necessary

Router settings such as APN, DNS, network mode and VPN can affect the whole internet connection. So change one setting at a time and note the original value before you change anything. Then you can easily go back if the result gets worse.
