Normally you should not change the APN if the internet works. Most phones and routers read the right setting automatically from the SIM card.
The APN should mainly be changed during troubleshooting, for example if you have a mobile signal but no internet connection and support has confirmed which APN value to use.
Check first
- That the SIM card is active and has data left.
- That mobile data is on.
- When used abroad: that data roaming is on.
- Restart the device.
If the problem persists, you can check the APN. It is best to write down the existing setting before you change anything.
What the APN does
APN stands for Access Point Name and tells the mobile network how the data connection should be set up. A wrong APN can mean that the router has a signal and registers on a mobile network but still has no internet.
The APN is normally filled in automatically. Only change it if a Wifi.se guide or support gives a specific value. After changing the APN you should save the setting and restart the data connection or the router.
Do not change more than necessary
Router settings such as APN, DNS, network mode and VPN can affect the whole internet connection. So change one setting at a time and note the original value before you change anything. Then you can easily go back if the result gets worse.
