Does the APN need to be changed?

No, you normally do not need to change the APN when you travel between countries.

The APN setting belongs to the SIM card and is used to connect to the operator’s data network. In most cases the same APN works automatically even when the roaming SIM connects to different partner operators in Europe.

If the SIM card has a signal but the internet still does not work, the APN may be one of the causes you should check. But do not change the APN unnecessarily if the connection already works.

First check that data roaming is switched on, the SIM card is active and network selection is set to Auto. If the problem persists, check that the right APN for your SIM card and data plan is set.

What the APN does

APN stands for Access Point Name and tells the mobile network how the data connection should be set up. A wrong APN can mean that the router has a signal and registers on a mobile network but still has no internet.

The APN is normally filled in automatically. Only change it if a Wifi.se guide or support gives a specific value. After changing the APN you should save the setting and restart the data connection or the router.

How network selection works when roaming

When roaming, the device searches for available partner networks. Automatic network selection is normally the first choice, but if the connection does not work, manual network selection can be a good troubleshooting step. Remember: a network that appears in the list does not automatically mean that your SIM is allowed to register on it.

If it still does not work

Check the status of the service and then test one thing at a time. When you contact Wifi.se support, please tell us which router you are using, which SIM/eSIM it concerns, which country you are in and what you have already tested. That way we can start directly with the right troubleshooting step.
