5 GHz is a frequency band the router uses for its Wi-Fi.
It is used to connect phones, computers, tablets and smart TVs to the router, for example.
Advantages of 5 GHz
5 GHz normally gives:
- higher Wi-Fi speed
- less interference from other radio devices
- good performance when you are close to the router
That is why it is well suited, for example, for streaming, video calls and other uses that need more speed.
Does 5 GHz have a shorter range?
Yes. 5 GHz normally has a shorter range than 2.4 GHz, and the signal is more affected by walls and other obstacles.
So if you are further away from the router, 2.4 GHz sometimes works better.
5 GHz is not the same as 5G
It is important to distinguish between Wi-Fi on 5 GHz and the 5G mobile network.
5 GHz describes the Wi-Fi connection between the router and your devices.
5G describes the router’s connection to the mobile network.
