2.4 GHz is one of the frequency bands the router uses for its Wi-Fi.
It is used to connect, for example:
- phones
- tablets
- computers
- smart TVs
- heat pumps
- smart home devices
Advantages of 2.4 GHz
2.4 GHz normally gives:
- a longer range than 5 GHz
- better penetration of walls and obstacles
- support for many older and simpler Wi-Fi devices
That is why 2.4 GHz is especially useful for devices that are a bit further away from the router.
Is 2.4 GHz slower?
2.4 GHz often gives a lower speed than 5 GHz, and the frequency band can be more crowded because many different radio devices use it.
For ordinary browsing and many smart devices, 2.4 GHz still works very well.
Remember that 2.4 GHz is the Wi-Fi frequency between the router and the device. It is not the same as 4G or 5G, which the router uses to connect to the mobile network.
