Wi-Fi is the wireless network that the router creates so that your devices can connect to the internet without a network cable.
With Wi-Fi you can connect, for example:
- phones
- tablets
- computers
- smart TVs
- media players
- other wireless devices
Wi-Fi and the mobile network are not the same thing
The router gets its internet connection via 4G or 5G from the mobile network. It then shares the internet with your devices over Wi-Fi.
So you can be connected to the router’s Wi-Fi even if the router currently has no internet connection.
Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
Many routers offer Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
2.4 GHz normally has a longer range and works with many different types of device.
5 GHz can give higher speed over shorter distances but usually has a slightly shorter range.
This must not be confused with the 5G mobile network. Wi-Fi on 5 GHz and 5G are two different technologies.
