In the evening more people often use the internet at the same time. This can mean that both the campsite Wi-Fi and the mobile network are more heavily loaded.
If you use a router with a SIM card, you share the mobile network’s capacity with other users in the area. If many people stream, work or browse at the same time, the speed can therefore drop.
Common causes
The speed can be affected by:
- many users on the same mobile mast
- heavy load on the campsite network
- streaming in high resolution
- large downloads and updates
- a weak signal or a long distance to the mobile mast
That is why the speed is often better in the morning or during the day and lower in the busy evening hours.
What can I do?
Try the following:
- place the router closer to a window
- place it higher up
- restart the router
- test 4G instead of 5G if the connection is unstable
If the speed is only low at certain times of day, it is often due to the load on the local mobile network and not a fault in the router.
What affects speed
Mobile speed does not only depend on whether the display says 4G or 5G. Distance to the mast, frequency band, obstacles, network load, placement and the operator used can make a big difference. So a stable 4G network can sometimes give a better result than a weak 5G network.
